Harrow Crossbow with 10D Canadian Soft mesh

Time to restart the show, it’s been quite a long time since my last post. Here’s a treat for you, featuring Canadian Soft mesh, intended for a defensive box lacrosse player. I went for a low pocket to allow the player to keep the ball away from those feisty attackmen and run up the field without having to worry about losing the ball. So as you can guess, hold is very good. Whip is small but it will probably whip more in time as even though it’s double thickness mesh, it’ll break in and bag a little.

Warrior Savage II with 10D Semi Soft Mesh

When I first bought these heads a year ago, they came strung with green soft mesh. There were three of them, and not one has formed a pocket since then. I’ve restrung them multiple times, the best idea for the soft mesh was a double sidewall design. I’ve also strung them with 1lacrosse Ready Mesh, which worked but wasn’t very pretty. This only goes to show how far selecting the right mesh can take us.

As I had a free hand I decided to try somewhere between the Semi Hard Ready Mesh and the Soft Mesh that I’ve strung these heads with before. That left me with Semi Soft. Needless to say, that was a bullseye selection.

The pocket came out right where I wanted it, with the channel nicely formed as opposed to my many previous attempts. In terms of performance I must say catching is very pleasant as the once ever present rebounds were eliminated. It throws soft with minimal whip and hold is good. For the stat junkies: Whip: 2/10, Hold: 6/10 as far as I can tell.

It’s not broken in yet so I’m sure it’ll need some minor modifications as it does, but nothing a little bottom string tightening won’t fix.

Warrior Odyssey with 6 diamond mesh

The Warrior Odyssey is rather old. I believe it’s a 2003 model(in fact it’s from the 90′s and still kickin’ ). Yes, that makes it rather old I don’t really like 6 diamond mesh, so I string it to learn. I also use the Odyssey as a testing ground for new ideas as it’s much too pinched and unplayable right now. It’s also rather heavy.

The idea was to make a 6D High Pocket. I don’t really like whip so it practically doesn’t have any. Hold is decent, I can crank it back quite a bit without the ball falling out. The higher mesh angle near the top also made it easier to pick up ground balls with it (the top of the head is really thick). I think the mesh is Jima Hard 6D, but I can’t really say as I got it used.

A single rolled shooter and a single weaved nylon provide enough traction for my liking. A high pocket usually warrants less shooters unless you like whip.

STX Profile Redone

As the previous installment of the Primer I strung had a bit too much whip, I followed the the tips given to me by the always helpful guys over at TLF. Thanks!

Soft mesh seems to work better with rolled shooters, giving it less whip. I removed the two weaved U shooters and replaced them with two straight Rolled shooters and a Rolled U. As you can see, the pocket is more pronounced after the many more wall-ball repetitions that it took me to get it right.

STX Profile with Soft Mesh

As much as I hate Warrior Soft Mesh, stringing something hard is the best way to learn something new.

I knew I had an STX Profile lying around in my attic somewhere, but when I found it and inspected the stringing I found it lacking. It was fitted with a piece of Ready Mesh from 1lacrosse that was crooked (the mesh, not the stringing) and thus hard to break in as it wasn’t symmetrical. I had the brand new piece of mesh left over from the previous Outlaw, so I decided to string it on.

I must say, I hated the STX the way it was previously, but now it’s quite a different stick. It only goes to show, that good stringing is a key for you to be sattisfied woth your head. Any head for that matter. Some are harder to string, some are easier.

The final product has quite a bit of whip to it, which seems to be the case with Soft Mesh combined with U shooters. Hold seems rather good and release is very quick. The ball flies fast and true without much effort. The pocket placement is Mid to Low-Mid.
